…a three-day, free festival of peace, love and rock ’n’ roll. Half a million people showed up to watch an unbelievable cast: Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, The Band, Joe Cocker, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, to name a few. For some Americans, it was unpatriotic, plain and simple, an insult carrying all the earmarks of the hippie counterculture. Thing is, in-country, this was the music we listened to, the volume turned up.
